Target to debut in Saskatoon, Canada

RBR Staff Writer Published 27 January 2012

US-based discount retailer Target plans to debut in Saskatchewan with a new outlet in the Mall at Lawson Heights located in Saskatoon. The firm had previously purchased the leasehold interest in the mall.

The new store will be located in the current Zeller's location in the mall and is expected to open in the summer of 2013. The store will employ about 150-200 people.

The discount chain has plans to set up 125 to 135 retail outlets in Canada, the majority of which will open in 2013. About $10m to $11m will be invested to remodel each facility.

StarPhoenix quoted Target spokesperson Sarah VanNevel as saying that the location at the Mall at Lawson Heights will be closed for several months near the end of the year.

"Each store (to be converted) will close for a six- to nine-month period for significant renovations before it opens as a target store," VanNevel said.

Minneapolis-based Target, which operates 1,767 stores across the US, plans to open its first stores in Canada this year.
